Letters From Cathy & Barry Lindeman

Dear 4 ASD Kids,

I just wanted to give you an update on Josh and his progress over the last few months.

Josh now does his therapy sessions in a group setting, he has a session in the morning with 3 other boys and then a session in the afternoon with one other child.

He has responded really well to these group sessions, with his therapist say that he tries very hard to follow instructions and to be a good boy, which gives me great hope that he will be able to cope and fit in at prep next year.

His speech is improving too, a lot of the words he has been struggling with he can now say fine on their own and he is only having difficulty when he is using them in a sentence which is one of the things we work on not just at Little Souls but at home as well. I had a lovely moment a few weeks ago where Josh who has been calling the computer a ‘puter’ for as long as I can remember came up to me and said to me “mummy can I please use the computer” clear as day, I was so excited and it makes me realize that given the other words he struggles with will become clearer too.

We also thought that to help prepare Josh for prep next year it might be a good idea to get him used to participating and following instructions in a larger group and one which was in a different setting to his therapy sessions, so Barry and I enrolled Josh at the local Soccer Club in their program for 3 – 6 year olds. At first it was a struggle with issues arising that we hadn’t had to deal with in a very long time. All of a sudden he couldn’t cope with grass on his shoes and he wouldn’t touch the ball if it had grass on it, things that he hadn’t had a problem with for over a year now.

Hi did not want to join in on any of the group games and would either stand off to the side or do his own thing.

It took nearly two months and a few tears (mostly on his part but I must admit I shed a few too) but he is now really enjoying his soccer and we have seen a huge improvement in his co-ordination and ball skills, but what I am most proud of is that he has made a couple of friends all on his own.

I can’t believe the changes in Josh over the last year and a half and we are so thankful for the huge part you have played in this. I could never have imagined that he could achieve so much in such a short amount of time and words could never express how truly grateful we are for all your support.

Warm Regards

Barry and Cathy Lindemann
